01 Questions and answers

What formats are available, and how long is each one?

Three pieces, each cut to fit a programme. The Shift runs 45 to 70 minutes, as a keynote or a keynote with questions and answers. The Last Taboo runs 45 to 60 minutes as a keynote, a plenary or a fireside. Missing: One Libido is a full stage show: 70 to 90 minutes. A 45 minute festival edit is available. A half-day masterclass is also available where a room needs to leave with a draft document rather than a decision.

Do you deliver in person and virtually?

Both. A virtual session is the same talk, rebuilt for a camera rather than streamed from a stage: shorter, with the questions brought forward and the slides redrawn for a laptop screen. Everything a live booking includes is included virtually. If your audience is split across offices, say so in the enquiry and the format is chosen around the split rather than against it.

Hope travels internationally. How does that work, and what about time zones?

Based between Australia and the United Kingdom. Speaks internationally, in person and virtually. Long-haul dates are planned with a rest day before the event, so a keynote is never delivered off an overnight flight, and travel is invoiced at cost. For virtual sessions the time zone is yours, and two bases in two hemispheres mean most working days are covered without anybody taking a call at midnight. Enquiries are answered within four hours during business hours, in your time zone where we can.

How does booking work?

Send the room, the date and the audience through Book Hope. You will have a reply within four hours during business hours with the format that fits and a quote. A deposit confirms the date. After that there is a pre-event brief by call, the talk is tailored to your audience, and you are sent the material you need to promote it. Everything for the promotion itself is in the Speaker Kit, ready to forward.

Can the talk be customised for our audience?

Yes, and it always is. Every booking includes a pre-event brief where we go through who is in the room, what has already been said to them about this subject, and what you need them to be able to do afterwards. The argument of the talk does not change. The examples, the framing and the closing action are built for your room. Each talk also has established cuts, so a male-majority audience, a clinical audience and a leadership audience each get the version written for them rather than a generic one.

What audience size suits these talks?

The keynotes are written for a plenary and hold their shape in a smaller room, including a boardroom or a leadership offsite. Missing: One Libido is written for a theatre, a festival tent or a ticketed evening, where the audience has chosen to be there. If your room is unusually small or unusually large, say so in the enquiry: it changes which piece is recommended, not whether one is.

May we record the talk?

Internal recording rights are included with workplace bookings, so the people who could not attend on the day are not excluded from the conversation. Public distribution, clips for social media and anything that leaves your organisation are agreed in writing beforehand, which is a matter of protecting the audience as much as the material: people ask candid questions in these rooms and they do so on the understanding that the room is the room. Filming the stage show is arranged separately with the venue.

Is this suitable for a workplace audience?

Yes. This is the question planners ask most, and the honest answer is that the talks are built for exactly this room. They are evidence based and professional, they are about health, retention and how people are managed, and they are not explicit. The same material is delivered to boards, medical colleges and government departments. Content is tailored to the room in the pre-event brief, so you know before the day what will be said and how. What the audience is asked to do is talk about a health issue at work, which is the point, and the talk gives them the language to do it without anybody in the room being embarrassed.

What does it cost?

Fees depend on the format and on the travel involved, so a talk is quoted for your event rather than published as a single figure. Tell us the room, the date and the format through Book Hope and you will have a quote, not a brochure.

What does the venue need to provide?

A handheld or lapel microphone, a confidence monitor, 16:9 projection and a stage time. Slides are delivered ahead of the day and no clicker is required. The full audiovisual and room requirements are in the Speaker Kit.

02 Fees

Fees depend on the format and on the travel. That is why there is no figure on this page.

A half-day masterclass, a virtual session and a keynote with a long-haul flight in front of it are three different pieces of work, and quoting them as one number would mean quoting the most expensive of the three to everybody. Tell us the room, the date and the format, and you will have a quote for your event.
